Lord Kell's Keep and Estate at a Glance

Davin Kell holds a moderately sized estate as Lord of Hannsport and its surrounding environs.  His keep sits on a rocky promontory above Hannsport, and possesses a commanding view of the surrounding countryside.  His formal jurisdiction extends ten miles in every direction from his stronghold, but for all practical purposes, his actual influence extends nearly unhindered into the wilds all the way to the edge of the Estate of Lemminkainen Meade, the Lord of Logash.

In addition to the village of Hannsport itself, Lord Kell also commands several other farms and nearby villages, the largest of which are Dark Oaks, Gorum's Vale and Hillsreach.  Each of these three villages is in turn governed by one of the half-elf's surviving retainers.

Dame Astrid March administers Hillsreach. LN Human Cleric 8

Sir Ulysses Marigan administers Gorum's Vale. LN Human Fighter 8

Due to the unswerving loyalty of these aging, influential warriors to their lord, as well as the co-operative circulation of resources between villages, Lord Kell's estate has proved to be extremely resilient, despite its remoteness.

Rogues Gallery - Magda Vyrlich

MAGDA VYRLICH

NG Human Wizard 7

Magda Viylich is the wife of Anton Vyrlich and an instructor of young wizards, having learned the art herself as a young woman growing up in Yorvik.

As there are not many who could otherwise afford the cost of wizard training in a northern fishing village, Magda finds ways to make arrangements for those who show promise.  Although she rarely has more than one or two students, those whom she does instruct are often able to earn admittance to the university in Yorvik.

When not keeping busy teaching or fulfilling her duties as the first lady of Hannsport, she loves nothing more than heading out into the woods to hunt with her family, Constable Dreng, and the ever reluctant Brother Markus.

She is much respected by the people of the village for her keen intellect and wise counsel, and is a valuable sounding board for her husband.

BROTHER MARKUS

LN Human Cleric (the Whispering Wind) 7

Like so many other arrivals over the last several years, Brother Markus of the Whispering Wind is a transplant in Hannsport.  Surprisingly young at twenty three years old, Markus was a bit of a prodigy in his native land of Hergstag.  Growing up in the shadow of the towers of  Yorvik University, his peculiar genius did not go unnoticed.  He was the youngest student to ever matriculate from the esteemed institute of learning, and was it's youngest ever instructor, with an insatiable desire for learning and solving problems, and yet...

Unfortunately, Markus also had an insatiable desire for beautiful young women, including the youngest daughter of the don of his college.

Deciding it was better to avoid any hired knives before they were in fact hired, he made his way out of the barony and into the wider world.  He discovered to his surprise that he liked the world outside the university even more than the one inside it.  He figured out how to make profitable use of his earlier-discarded clerical training, and actually became a reputable adventurer before settling down in Hannsport, a place as far away from the intrigues of Yorvik as he could get while still being within the reach of civilization.

Over the last few years, Brother Markus has spent some of his acquired wealth to rebuild the church on the bluff looking over the town, to restore its graveyard, and therefore to administer to the spiritual needs of the village.  In what spare time he has, he remains an inveterate researcher and tinkerer, and it is not unusual for odd smells to drift down from the bluff, or for strangely colored lights to illuminate the windows of the church basement in the darkness of the night.

It is worth noting that Markus has also been granted custody of the village records and histories by Anton Vyrlich, and keeps them neatly arranged and organized in the lower level of the church.  He supplements these materials with a regular supply of books of his own, which he spends money on now that a regular overland trade route has remained open.  As a result, his collection is broad, if not terribly deep, and represents the only true library in town.  On those occasions when a particularly interesting text is added to his collection, he will let Magda Vyrlich (the mayor's wife, and a skilled wizard) read it first, so that they might later discuss its contents over tea, as he relishes any touch of civilized discourse to be had in these parts.

All in all, Brother Markus is well liked in Hannsport, and trusted by most.  When the village is in need of someone to sit as magistrate, it is he who is called on to serve.  Although not a member if the council, he is regularly consulted by its members.  He is also known to be a true man of the spirit, being both celibate (to the dismay of Mayor Vyrlich's daughters) and a teetotaler (to the dismay of Constable Dreng).

Councilman Anton Vyrlich

LN Male Human Expert 8

Anton Vyrlich comes from an ambitious line of merchants originating in the southeastern corner of Northern Primordia.  Finding some early business success in the northern capital of Yorvik, Vyrlich was the first to extend a successful trade rout up to Logash, and then to Hannsport, shortly after Lord Davin Kell had cleared the last of the goblin tribes from the Greatwood, some fifteen years ago.

In time, he settled permanently in the small community, and was among the first to petition the increasingly absent lord of the village to grant a charter that would a council to govern its day to day affairs.  Vyrlich has served on the council ever since, and serves as de facto mayor.  His wife, Magda, is one of his closest advisors.

It was Vyrlich who, five years prior, had hired Mamadou Dreng from among the candidates for Constable that applied after the death of his predecessor at the hands of a roving band of bugbears.
Vyrlich and Dreng have been close friends ever since.  Being charismatic and a natural leader, Dreng has proved a good foil to Vyrlich's somewhat cool and appraising demeanor.  Between them, the two have ably administered the village for years.

Now if he could only get Markus to give up the celibate life and agree to a marriage to one of his daughters...

There are ten commonly recognized aspects of devotion in Northern Primordia, but as there are no rigid, dogmatic organizations in the world, each aspect of the great wheel is open to broad interpretation.  Depending on the individual or group, some aspects are highlighted, some are de-emphasized and some are even ignored.  The most significant example of this is the druidic tradition.  The druids of Primordia in general revere the natural world, as well as the elements and the sun and moon, while largely rejecting the urban, outer, and under worlds.

It is common for clerics of all faiths to carry some variation of the same holy symbol- the ten-pointed star.  Many druids acknowledge the significance of the symbol, as well, though their access to magic does not rely upon such things.

Rogues Gallery - Constable Dreng

CONSTABLE MAMADOU DRENG

NG Male Human Ex-Paladin 4 / Rogue 4

Originally a paladin of a southern order dedicated to the Radiant Orb, Dreng did his best to live up to the aspect's ideals for many years, but he could never quite follow the order's code when the temptation to cut corners was at its strongest. He was always at his best when battling evil with underhanded tricks: employing ambushes, faking injuries and luring opponents into traps. Although he was always fighting for the cause of the weak and downtrodden, whenever a just cause was truly on the line, Dreng could not resist the temptation to lie or sneak in order to get the job done. Dreng knew his actions were a slippery slope not only for him but also for the rest of his order. Rather than bring his superiors and colleagues into disrepute, he decided it best to resign and go his own way.
Dreng wandered for years, eventually making his way to Northern Primordia, and thence to the village of Hannsport, which was looking for a new constable.

Constable Dreng has served ably for several years, settling down in the fishing port and earning the respect of every villager.  He hasn't been able to get his friend, brother Markus, to drink with him (or to drink at all, for that matter), but he hasn't given up hope.  He enjoys his job, and works hard at keeping an orderly peace.  A part of Dreng, however, has always felt guilty or perhaps incomplete that he was never able to rise to the challenge of fulfilling a paladin's oath.

Rogues Gallery - Sir Davin Kell, Lord of Hannsport

SIR DAVIN KELL
Lord of Hannsport

?? Half-Elf Fighter

As a young knight newly charged with the defense of a minor fortification, Sir Davin Kell marshalled the small force under his command and hunted down a local marauding bandit troop to their their forest lair.  They refused to surrender, and when they were defeated, the surviving remnant were impaled to a man and left to rot in the sun.

When questioned later by his superiors concerning his conduct, the half-elven knight correctly replied that in refusing to surrender, his charge required no quarter be shown to his foes- he therefore executed the bandits.  When questioned further as to his particular methods, as opposed to a summary execution, Sir Davin also correctly replied that his charge did not specify how the bandits should be dispatched.  He further declared that his method ensured few others would be so foolish enough to take up the path of the lawless if they knew what fate awaited them.

All in all, it proved to be the beginning of a rather notorious career.

Some few years later, when he had risen through the ranks, Sir Davin was made lord of the most remote territory in the realm his superiors could find.  Regularly subject to sea raids from savage northmen, the isolated coastal fishing village in the center of his new holding could no longer afford the tribute that kept the raiders at bay.  Despite his well-earned reputation, Lord Davin's only charge was to secure the village from any further attacks.  If he succeeded, they assured him, he would be well rewarded as befit a landed lord.  If he instead failed, as his superiors assumed would be the case, then they would have rid themselves of an ambitious knight of dubious character.  Lord Davin and his men-at-arms arrived shortly before winter and immediately set his new subjects to forced work in preparation.

When the raiders arrived in their longships the following spring to collect their tribute, they were met by the new lord and his retainers at the dock.  The northmen demanded their due, and Lord Davin in turn demanded they remove their helmets, as protocol required.  When they refused, he had their helmets nailed to their heads, and cast their bodies back into the sea from whence they came.  Except for the group's leader— whose severed head, and its brutally fastened helm, were sent back to the viking chief as a warning to never return to the village.

The northmen did not heed the warning.

They stormed into the small settlement, burning as they went.  Never noticing the eerily empty streets, they surged toward the wooden fort that had been hastily erected at the edge of the village, and poured into its confines.  Before they realized their peril, they were sealed in from behind, and the heavily oiled timbers were set ablaze, burning the entire force alive.  Those few that had not been entrapped were quickly captured and met the same fate as the forest bandits had years ago.  Except for the chief—whom the knight flayed alive before drowning in the nearby sea.
The northmen did not return.

Upon securing his great victory over his foes, Lord Davin sent word enquiring as to his promised reward.  Within the month she arrived.  Genevieve of Graystone was a fair maid, wan and gentle of demeanor.  As the youngest daughter of an inconsequential house, she was considered no great loss to her family.  To Lord Davin, however, she became everything.

For despite his reputation as a harsh lord and merciless warrior, none questioned his devotion to his frail wife.  Most believed it was her graceful touch that softened what would otherwise have been a very difficult lordship, and as the years passed, the people of the region came to love their lady.  In her honor, several villagers planted a grove of hawthorn trees in the center of the community, and the lady visited the place often, planting flowers there each spring with the help of all the maids of the village.  Lord Kell devoted himself to both his wife, and his endless campaigns against the encroaching goblinoids that began descending from the mountains once the barrier of the northmen had been removed.  Lady Genevieve ruled Hannsport and the holding with fairness and grace in her lord’s absence, which was often enough for the villagers and surrounding farms to be quietly grateful.

Some years later, when Lady Genevieve was heavy with their first child and Lord Davin was in the field, commanding his men against an incursion of desperate bugbears, the nearly forgotten northmen at last took their revenge.  Their worst killers stole into the stone keep under cover of darkness and murdered the household staff as they slept.  When they finally came upon the defiant lady of the keep in her great hall, she cursed them in the ancient way.

Trembling before her rage and the fell and dire oaths she swore against them, they could barely bring themselves to slit her throat and leave her dying on the floor before fleeing in fear, taking nothing of value and leaving the lady Genevieve otherwise untouched and unviolated.

Retribution was terrible, and swift.

To this very day, few will speak of the days and months that followed, and even then only in hushed tones, for many atrocities were committed by the vengeful lord and his forces. When the slaughter had at last ceased, the northmen had been all but exterminated.

Now, more than twenty-five years have passed since that fateful time, and the elf-blooded knight is rarely seen.  In the many years since, Hannsport has been governed by a charter granted by Lord Kell to the petitioning villagers, leaving the day-to-day drudgery of governance to a small village council and an appointed constable.
